Youth Issues Recycle: Why Do College Students Procrastinate?

Youth issues are never really completely solved forever. When you think you have explained it to one generation, that generation grows up and another set of problems arise again. Why do college students procrastinate is not easily answered because it is one of the plagues that come with adolescence and beyond. Many a time the students that procrastinate learn why only after their delaying a particular project or term paper lands them in trouble.

Why Do College Students Procrastinate? Reason # 1: They Do Not Know Murphy’s Law.

The famous Murphy’s Law states that if anything can go wrong; it usually does. Therefore, if the computer has to crash the night before the term paper is due or the electricity has to go the night before the big exam, it usually will. Once this really happens to students, they try to start preparing in advance so that even if things do wrong at the last minute, they have some preparation underway.

Why Do College Students Procrastinate? Reason # 2: They Are Not Serious Enough.
Students take life too easy. They usually do not have to shoulder major responsibilities, they usually do not have to pay their own rent or feed a family so life is really a piece of cake. They are so involved in their fun and games that everything else usually takes a back seat.

Why Do College Students Procrastinate? Reason # 3: You Are Only Young Once.

Or so they are told. That is why they want to live life to the fullest. They want to have all the fun at sorority parties, beer festivals and late night movies. Whether they live in a dorm or share an apartment, they feel everything can wait except having spontaneous fun.

Why Do College Students Procrastinate? Reason # 4: They Do Not Want To Be A Nerd.

They think it is nerdy to be done with your work before time. They are afraid of being labeled a geek or weird if they have their exam mastered or report printed and bound a week before submission deadlines. They feel it is cool to scramble the night before, put an all-nighter and feel the adrenalin rush. Just like mothers have to threaten to take a privilege away unless kids clean up their room when they were younger, college students need to feel the loom right on their horizon before they stop the process of procrastination.. Two weeks seems like eternity for someone who lives in the moment. Tomorrow sounds more of a reason to get something done.

When teachers and parents ask why do college students procrastinate, they often forget that they did the exact same thing twenty odd years ago.
